Out of Joint

[Out of Joint #0 - Summer 2025]

Out of Joint
is NNONN’s cyclical study programme, conceived as a supplement to participants’ ongoing practice — including but not limited to artistic practice, curatorial work, art historical research, art criticism, etc.

Informed by NNONN’s broader practice-research — particularly its exploration of a mode of writing actively attuned to the shifting relationship between the old and the new — Out of Joint engages with art criticism and artistic practice, while simultaneously withdrawing from their conventional territories.

Out of Joint is structured around four cycles per year, eaching consisting of two units: [Reading I] and [Writing I].

[Reading I] consits of a proposed problem, a syllabus/dossier, and a series of seminars dedicated to the close reading of selected texts and works.

[Writing I] consits of writing workshops, one-on-one tutorials, writing assignments, and feedback sessions.

Out of Joint is practice-led and problem-based. Each cycle introduces a core problem (a thematic focus), around which both [Reading I] and [Writing I] revolve.

Each cycle of [Reading I] and [Writing I] is grounded in the development of essential skills for independent research and practice, both within the field of art and across the broader terrain of the arts and humanities.

While each cycle is concerned with a set problem, the general direction and the pace of both units, especially in the latter stages, are shaped by the group and the interests of those involved, and will in turn inform and feed into subsequent cycles.

[Reading I] will have a maximum of 20 participants, with seminars held online. [Writing I] is limited to 6 participants and centres on in-person writing workshops. The two units are enrolled separately. Prior participantion in [Reading I] is required to enroll in [Writing I].

Out of Joint is convened by Weitian Liu and supported through Weitian’s PhD scholarship. Participation is free. A pilot edition of [Reading I] will take place in summer 2025, ahead of the full launch in autumn 2025.
