About

NEW-NEW-OLD-NEW-NEW (NNONN) is a form of assemblage situated between a research centre and a 实践基地 (practice base) , or perhaps a fictional 门派 (school) that actually exists.

NNONN researches and practices the relationship between the new and the old: from new to old, from old to new, new to new new, new new to old...  This mode of research-practice gives rise to a milieu — a dedicated field under the aegis of a school — characterised by a sensus communis (collective sensibility) for singular historical experiences at the moment when a 'new-old' transition emerges.

Beginning with art criticism and artistic practice, NNONN explores a mode of writing— traversing artistic, critical, art-historical, and theoretical registers — that is actively attuned to the shifting relationship between the old and the new, particularly as it unfolds within art and criticism.

NNONN was founded in May 2025 by Weitian Liu and grows out of Weitian’s PhD project, funded by Asymmetry, in Advanced Practices at Goldsmiths, University of London.
